2020 HACEF Wall of Honor Scholarship
Evangelea Andreadis grew up in a home where community service is a very important part of her family’s life. Her community service centers around children and health, in alignment with her dreams of becoming a pediatrician. She’s been a teacher’s assistant at St. Paraskevi Greek school every Saturday for the last four years. She’s participated in the Library’s ‘Study Buddies’ and ‘Storybbook Halloween’ programs, and she’s worked as a floor aide at Huntington Hospital. While doing research for World History, she learned about ‘Sights on Health’, a non-profit which provides cataract surgeries for people in Peru, and that inspired her to run a successful eye-glass drive for that organization.
Sean Broderick is a proud member of the Wildlife Conservation Society because he wants to protect wildlife around the world, and to contribute to keeping the circle of life in balance. He volunteers weekly at the Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, and helps with the Ancient Order of Hibernians’ monthly food drives. He also served his school community as the JV Boys’ Basketball manager: “Sean was always the first one to give positive words of encouragement to his teammates during games.”
“[Sean made] all those around him better.” One supporter wrote: “He has taught me that if things become challenging, that just means that you need to change your approach and tackle the issue in a different way.”
Samantha Lustig volunteered over 300 hours at a summer camp for children with pediatric cancer. She impressed those around her with her incredible character, maturity, and work ethic. She deftly handled the unique challenges of this camp and gave the campers under her charge amazing experiences each day. Samantha has also volunteered significant hours at Huntington Hospital and Cohen Children’s Medical Center. In our Harborfield’s community, she has served as coach and mentor for Girls on the Run, participated in Athletes Helping Athletes, and helped out in any way she could. She is an inspiration to those around her causing more than one of us to say, “she does so much, she makes me feel like I don’t do enough!”
2020 HACEF Exceptional Service Scholarship
Austen Debus, a member of the 2020 Academic All-County team, is a true scholar athlete who takes seriously his role as a mentor to younger students. As part of the Athletes Helping Athletes program, he spoke to TJL students about sportsmanship, civility, and healthy choices, and warned them about the dangers of vaping, drugs, and underage drinking. He served as President of HACO, helped special needs students through Kids Plus, and participated in the Boys State program run by the American Legion.
Victoria Lanner: “Tori is the heart and soul of our Harborfields High School morning announcements show that is live streamed each morning. ” She’s a Natural Helper, a peer counselor, and the captain/choreographer of the HF Kickline team – she choreographed the dance they performed during the Disney parade. An active member of the Rotary Youth Leadership Association, whose motto is “service above self”, she was one of very few chosen to plan leadership conferences for high school students across Long Island.
Hope Lusby serves as an ambassador of Huntington Youth Court, conducting workshops and presentations, and upholding the principles of restorative justice. She leads a team of student volunteers, training them through mock-trials, team-building meetings, and assisting in the coaching of student-lawyers. Her primary responsibility, in her own impressive words, “has been to instruct other members regarding confidentiality and ethics inside and outside of the courtroom, in order to ensure that our conduct reflects that of a trustworthy unit”. She is also an accomplished Violinist who shares her passion for music with TJL’s orchestra students, helping and encouraging them during concerts, and serving as a positive role model.
Katlin Modica carries a spirit of community service with her everywhere she goes. As President of the Centerport United Methodist Youth Group, Katlin’s leadership contributed to “Midnight Run”, which supports the homeless in NYC, “HIHI” which supports the homeless in Huntington, and “UMARMY”, which offers building improvements and social support to needy seniors and families in the northeast. She is inclusive to all and goes out of her way to make sure everyone feels welcome and engaged. She has also contributed to community projects abroad, including two trips to the Dominican Republic to support building projects and medical efforts.
2020 HACEF Distinguished Service Scholarship
Caitlin Collins exemplifies unparalleled character. She’s a member of the Leaders Club at the Huntington YMCA, where she’s been a counselor-in-training for five years. She possesses an innate skill for bringing people together and making them feel included. She is a 1st Lieutenant in the Centerport Fire Department Cadets program. There she learns life saving measures, and how to care for the community in times of danger. She hopes to join the Fire Department as an EMT when she turns 18.
Sarah DeVito’s effervescent personality and charisma help bring out the best in those she works with, whether she’s protecting trails on Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina, or rebuilding homes, side by side with their owners in the Dominican Republic. She has also worked behind the scenes to put on concerts for Maggie’s Mission, helping to make it one of the biggest fundraisers hosted by Harborfields. She approaches her service with positivity, resilience and zeal.
Michael Martinez is bright, energetic, compassionate, and genuinely well rounded. He has served as an active member of the United States Naval Sea Cadets Corp for the past four years. As Color Guard Commander, he honors our nation’s colors and our veterans for all they have done for us. His community service includes escorting veterans to summer concerts, working directly with the VVA Chapter 11, American Legion, Northport Veterans Medical Center, and the The Northport Kiwanis Club. He also volunteers his talents as a guitarist monthly at OLQM.
Samantha Verdon, a member of Playfest and Stage Crew, helped in two successful Harborfields play productions: Charity Water which raises funds for clean drinking water in Third World countries, and Maggie’s Mission, which raises money for cancer research. Samantha has also been involved in numerous art related community service projects that help beautify our school and community. She shares her passion for Art with younger campers during the summer, helping them refine their painting and drawing skills, and reminding them that what’s important is to enjoy the process of creating.
2020 HACEF Pride Scholarship
Aedan Spillane is a warm hearted, independent, and mature young man. Whether it is in the classroom, participating in community service, or most importantly, looking after his family, Aedan is an individual who takes his responsibilities seriously and he gives his full commitment and effort into any undertaking he is involved in. Aedan’s resilient nature helps him push through the challenges that life throws his way and his drive to succeed will ensure his success in the future.
2020 HACEF Spirit Scholarship
Daniella Rodriguez Rebolledo is a vibrant, intelligent, and hard-working young woman. She has served as Vice-President of National Art Honor Society, Co-President of Multicultural Club, and she is a talented musician who is a member of our Chamber Orchestra. Community service is very important to Daniella; she has been an active member of her church, always striving for ways to help others. Daniella manages many responsibilities at home while also working part-time. The sky is the limit for this very special young lady. Daniella will be greatly missed but we know she will go on to accomplish wonderful things in her future.
