Morning Summer Camps

WEEK 1

Stuffed Creatures
Instructor: Keri Puglisi
Grades: K-6

This camp will be SEW much fun! Taught by Keri Puglisi of EmmaLoops Creative Studio in Huntington, this class will explore hand sewing at each child’s level, whether they are new to sewing or have been sewing for years. Students will create a unique and lovable stuffed animal/creature of their very own design. With each project, students will experiment with cutting, pinning, and hand sewing as well as explore different embellishments like buttons and beads and how to best add to their work. No prior sewing experience needed.

Hola! Buenos Dias!

This fun and enthusiastic camp will immerse children in Spanish language, culture, art, and music. Experience the sights and sounds of the countries in the world that speak this language. Sing songs and act out scenes in Spanish, discover famous artists–such as Pablo Picasso–create your very own pinata, and mucho more! Eat-aly: Intro to Italian Cooking

Discover the wonderful tastes and smells of this beloved style of cooking! Learn how to make fresh pizza and breads from scratch with homemade dough you roll out and knead yourself. (The best you will ever eat!) Uncover secret family recipes as your child experiments with fresh ingredients, herbs and vegetables straight from the garden! Of course, no cooking camp would be complete without mouth-watering Italian desserts such as Chocolate Biscotti, Flourless Chocolate Cake, and more! Bellisimo recipes will be shared and taken home to use again and again!

Super Sleuths
Instructor: Robyn Weber
Grades: 4-6

Paging young Sherlock Holmeses! This “mysterious” camp will be right up your alley! Campers will learn to listen for and observe clues to complete various mysteries, analyze fingerprints, and even make fingerprint art. They will crack secret codes and make a Morse code bracelet. The week will culminate with a mystery party where campers have to solve “The Case of the Missing Jewels.” They will receive clues and tasks to accomplish in order to get a clue letter. When the letters are unscrambled, the location of the missing jewels will be revealed. All campers will go home with a “Super Sleuth Kit” including disguise glasses, invisible ink pens, magnifying lenses, and more.

American Sign Language

This camp will provide a stimulating learning experience that will be exciting for all children to discover. Have you ever wanted to learn how to talk with your hands? This camp will teach the basics of ASL (American Sign Language): The alphabet, numbers, colors, and basic words and phrases such as “I love my family.” Your child will leave camp being able to have a basic conversation in Sign Language.

Robotics

Robotics is a cutting-edge learning opportunity for our Harborfields children, presenting students with the chance to learn and enjoy programming, mechanical design, and electrical construction. Being proficient in robotic challenges offers much in the way of technological skill development, planning, executive organization, and teamwork as well as offering unique chances for creative expression. These life-changing skills will help give students a leg up in technology—all while having a great time!

Hands on Clay
Instructor: Jeannie Ritter
Grades: 6-8

A fun four days of exploring all aspects of 3D work through clay: handbuilding, an introduction to the Potter’s wheel, and slip casting. Campers will use their imagination and new skills to create both decorative and functional ceramics to create beautiful treasures. Campers will also learn how to load and fire the kiln as well as experiment with various glaze applications. The week will end with an art exhibit for family and friends.

Engineering

Open to both boys and girls! In this fun and exploratory foundation class, students will gain valuable insight into the fascinating world of how things work. From formulating ideas to concept drawing to planning formal design concepts to creating finished products, campers will work in teams to create and problem-solve. Assignments will include homemade fidget spinners, kites, and a puzzle cube using everyday materials such as Popsicle sticks, paper clips, straws, and even balloons. A fascinating camp that truly offers much in the way of both practical and life skills!

Kindergarten Here I Come

The enthusiastic and creative Diane Young is back and ready to introduce your little ones to Washington Drive Elementary School! This camp was such a hit last summer, we knew we had to offer it again. This is a unique and soothing opportunity for your child to meet other Harborfields children entering kindergarteners in a relaxed, gentle, and fun setting. There will be loads of hands-on projects, friendship-building activities, joyful music, and playful games to help the children enjoy themselves, their environment, and each other! *Please note that this Kindergarten camp is offered three times this summer and is repeatable; there will be different projects each session.

Curious Kids STEM Camp

“What happens if….?” is a question that will be asked each and every day in this camp! This fun and stimulating camp offers plenty of unique art activities as well as math and science experiments to engage young minds. Children will problem-solve, observe and explore while making homemade Playdoh, tie-dying, painting ping pong balls, crafting houses out of cardboard boxes, blowing paint with straws, building structures with toothpicks, and illustrating an outside mural using ocean water. What happens when you paint with a feather, an ice cube or other unusual materials? Let’s find out together!

Chocolate Mania

Get your taste buds ready for some sweet and salty sensations as you learn the amazing things you can create with chocolate! This chocolate-making workshop allows you to create and explore this confection as never before. Learn how to dip, mold, and decorate delicious chocolate creations. Design your own candy box to take home, make extraordinary lollipops, experiment with clever molds, wrap your creations beautifully, and much more! By the end of the week you will become a master chocolatier, ready to throw your own Chocolate Fondue Party!

Introduction to Video Production

Constantly searching for the best video apps? Gain useful skills to create impactful small digital video productions! Campers will learn basic aspects of video camera, storing digital video, and shooting video. They will learn video editing techniques through the use of video editing software. They will also have the opportunity to produce several different productions including: autobiographies, commercials, interviews, newscasts, family productions and more. All productions will be saved for take-home use.

Cool Coding

An invaluable camp for those highly interested in computers and computer programming! Learn the science behind these technological game-changers and find out how you can create video games, programming languages, website design and coding, animation, robotic technology and much more. Emphasis will be placed on the mechanics and engineering aspect of computers, so that students can discover what makes them function, from the inside out. There will be group activities to reinforce valuable computer science concepts.

Cookie Creations

Learn how to bake 8 different scrumptious cookies from scratch to surprise your friends and parents! While our cookies are baking, we will make a recipe book for you to decorate and keep. Your child will really start to feel more “at home” with baking, learning proper measurements, substitutions, baking “secrets” and safety in the kitchen. We will also personalize our own aprons to wear while baking. Each day, there will be delicious treats to take home and share.

Hair Flair

Love those awesome hair videos on YouTube? Professional Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Ali Gagnon will show you how to make different kinds of braids, create unique hairstyles, and use temporary, wash-out chalk hair colors in this stylish camp! Each camper will receive a small hairstyling kit, complete with a practice mannequin, hair tools, and fun accessories. Ali will offer hands-on training to girls interested in learning hair styling skills–all while building effective communication, teamwork, and self-esteem.

Painting Al Fresco

Having trouble choosing between an indoor summer activity and an outdoor one? Now you don’t have to! Make art while enjoying the beautiful summer outdoors with Painting Al Fresco camp! This camp includes four fun days of exploring various sketching and painting techniques. Students will have sketchbook exercises and learn tips and styles for painting gorgeous landscapes, gardens, perhaps even the beach! Follow our professional art instructor to a new creative place each day (both on campus and off) to learn and make friends who like art as much as you do. The week will end with an art exhibit for family and friends.

Photography

See the world through your lens! Capture great images and refine them through digital imaging. This fun experience will teach students how to really use their digital cameras and then how to edit those images in Adobe Photoshop. Students will learn the different modes and settings on their cameras, learn about photographic composition, lighting, and editing in Photoshop. Campers are encouraged to use their own camera if they have one, but cameras can be provided as well. An art exhibit for family and friends will be held on the last day of camp!

Storybooks Come Alive

Small campers will be whisked into the magical world of favorite storybooks, as they experience these books using all their senses! Maybe one day you will give a pig a pancake and the next day help Pete sing a song when he loses a groovy button! What would happen if we DO let the pigeon drive the bus? Joyful and sensory art projects including drawing, painting, and clay will help bring these whimsical characters, even creatures such as dragons and unicorns, to life. Children will be encouraged to bring in their favorite books to share with the class and see what fun can be “drawn” out of the story to make it even more wonderful.

Pokémon STEM Camp

We choose YOU for this lovable and engaging camp that uses the fun and spirit of this time-honored show to teach valuable lessons in team-building and science. From Pokémon battles to building catapults and Pikachu crafts, kids will love the clever ways they can use their minds to defeat the mischievous Team Rocket. Learn a bit about science classification by discussing Pokémon “types,” design your own unique Pokémon card and play a numbers game, witness the process of metamorphosis with various “evolving” Pokémon and devise your own Pokémon Go game with a giant scavenger hunt! How many words can you get out of the word “Charmander?” Make a fizzing Pokéball and see what happens when you place it in water! Are you ready for these Masterful ideas? You Gotta Catch ‘Em all!

Individual and group challenges including puzzles, crafts, and games will be enjoyed by all. How can we be superheroes in our own life… and help others? Fashion Design
Instructor: Roe Elder
Grades: 5-9

Do you enjoy flipping through the pages of magazines and keeping up with the latest trends? Do you love the artistry of stunning attire? Enter the exciting world of fashion and learn how to create your own contemporary fashion designs! Students will learn to apply clothing to the fashion figure (croquie) and how to render fabrics, textures, styles of details on clothing and become skillful in various techniques using color pencils and markers. You’ll be ready for the red carpet when you design an elegant gown for the Academy Awards and a stunning cocktail dress for the MTV Awards. Those with interest can even research designs to create a one-of-a-kind wedding gown.

WEEK 4
July 22 – July 25

HACEF Full Day of Fun Camp!
Instructor: Cris Brookes/Maria Brown
Grades: K-2

For the first time ever, HACEF is proud to present TWO HACEF CAMPS combined to make one amazing FULL-DAY camp! Spend half the day crafting unique art projects, whipping up spectacular, ooey gooey creations such as rainbow slime, and marshmallow Oobleck. Then spend the other half of the day with exciting experiments and STEM Activities such as creating catapults, candy “bridge” sculptures, and making scientific observations with prisms. Campers will also have fun playing games and participating in “Minute to Win It” challenges. Each day of the week will have a different theme (like “Winter in Summer” and “Candytopia!”) The day is divided into two portions to keep all projects age appropriate: Younger children (grades K-2) will take the Art class in the morning, then the Science class in the afternoon; older children (grades 3-5) will experience Science in the morning, then Art in the afternoon.

Bubblepalooza!

Bubbles, bubbles, everywhere! From making your very own awesome bubble solution to experimenting with a bubble machine to make gigantic bubbles, this camp is really going to POP! Can you blow a bubble with gum? How big? Can you blow up a bubble with something OTHER than air? Do square bubble wands make square bubbles? Let’s try it out! This stimulating camp will offer your child a chance to learn about a wide variety of different bubbles—in all shapes and forms and engage in really cool science experiments. Let’s use bubbles to help us make beautiful art, too! Get ready to have a bubble blast.

Jedi Training Academy
Instructor: Sonia Armstrong
Grades: 1-4

This is the camp (and the droids) you’ve been looking for… Welcome to Jedi Master Armstrong’s training academy for Jedi hopefuls. Jedi applicants will construct their own lightsabers and will then choreograph a battle with another Jedi opponent by learning martial arts training moves. Perhaps a surprise visit from Darth Vader will jolt these Jedis into action! Applicants will need to use their skills to rescue Han Solo from the carbonite. Use Jedi mind tricks and meditation to outwit the Dark Side then build your own X-Wing fighter vehicle to join the rebellion and help restore peace to the galaxy! This Star Wars camp will be a mix of fun STEM activities, arts and crafts, and outside fun! May the force be with you!

Nature Explorers Go Green!
Instructor: Nicole Ercolano

How’s it growing? Step into the outdoors and experience the beauty of nature by discovering the various plants and flowers of where we live. This engaging camp offers a true hands-on experience—getting kids comfortable in the garden and in the dirt so they can observe the wonder of nature up close! Participate in scavenger hunts, decorate planters, plant vegetables from seed, learn how to use a map and learn about the amazing plants and animals that live around Long Island. Even make crafts outdoors such as “leaf rubbings”! Then come back inside, wash up, and learn how to make a homemade “worms in the dirt” snack with gummy worms!

Time for Slime

Kids just love that squishy, stretchy, bouncy slime…the colors, the textures, and the jiggly movement! In this camp, kids will experiment with different kinds of slime: traditional slime, tinted slime, glow-in-the-dark slime, puffy slime, “unicorn” slime, textured slime (with beads) and much more! The slimes will be taken home each day in their own individual containers. Kids will enjoy both the sensory, tactile experience of handling the slime and the cool things it can teach us about polymers and science. Campers will also make an emoji-themed craft each day as well! * Slime can be made without Borax if parents would prefer.

Harborfields Comic Con

Calling all comic book fans to a super celebration of sci-fi & fantasy, comic books, artists, cosplayers (folks who dress up as their favorite characters) and so much more! Comic-Con isn’t just about comics. Explore, create and transform yourself into your favorite pop culture character. Think Wonder Woman, Spiderman, or your favorite Lord of the Rings character. Turn recycled materials, found objects, fabrics, and other items into one of a kind costumes–the likes of which you’d never believe! There are a multitude of materials, including paint and other embellishments, that will help you create one-of-a-kind and unforgettable characters. Bring your imagination and an idea of a character you’d like to create–or we can think of one together.

Making Summer Memories

Turn off the phones and tune into Summer! This camp is a return to beloved and traditional games and activities to delight a child’s imagination. Campers will participate in sand art and tie-dying, decorate bottles to catch fireflies, and whip up bubble paint to make wild designs. Create a sign for a lemonade stand… and then sell it together as a group to raise money for charity. Kids will learn strategy and communication skills while playing favorite board games such as Scrabble, Battleship, and Monopoly. The children will play old-fashioned outdoor games like kick ball, hopscotch, Red Light Green Light and also engage in a scavenger hunt…with an awesome prize at the end!

This camp will tap into a child’s rich imagination to help develop their unique thoughts into reality by combining wonderful art materials with basic story elements. Make your very own animals and toys and tell unforgettable stories using sculpture clay, acrylic paints, collages, and drawings. Using the ideas of setting, narrative, and character development, these creations will come to life and can be shared with family and friends. This is a great way to prompt both story-telling and self-expression in children.

Let’s Get Knitting

One of the best hobbies to learn and discover, knitting opens up a whole world of fun possibilities! Knitting extraordinaire Keri Puglisi, designer & owner of Loops by Keri hand knits and half of the duo behind EmmaLoops Creative Studio in Huntington, will teach campers the ins and outs of this exciting craft. This class will explore hand knitting at each student’s level…. including right AND left- handed knitters. Learn how to put stitches on a needle, how to create and use different stitches, and much more. Students can choose what project to work on, including a pair of fingerless mitts or a scarf for a doll/stuffed friend or themselves. To ensure each child is successful, there will be options for crocheting, finger knitting and pompom making throughout the class week! The benefits of knitting: Increases fine motor skills, improves memory and math skills, works both sides of the brain…. and most importantly, it’s a lot of fun! No prior experience needed, beginners welcome!

Crop, Paper, Scissors

Enjoy the fun and inventive ways you can embellish photographs to preserve unforgettable memories with the art of scrapbooking. Former magazine editor and craft stylist Karin Fey will be teaching the ins-and-outs of cropping photos, mounting and layering techniques. Your child will explore the artistic possibilities of mixing and layering photographs and gorgeous images with paper, wood, glass, tile, fabric, tissue paper, musical sheets, pages from books, and other materials to create truly one-of-a-kind objects. Children will become familiar with using different craft tools, including decorative scissors, punches, and stamps to put their own personalized mark on their work. Besides each creating their own full scrapbook album by the end of camp, campers will also participate in many other projects including decoupage and a daily surprise “Mystery Craft” to encourage imagination and ingenuity.

Under the Sea

The perfect camp for beach and ocean lovers: Let’s draw inspiration for our art from the beautiful sea, teeming with diverse and beautiful creatures—including real animals and those that are magical and mystical! Paint gorgeous watercolor aquatic scenes with sharks, mermaids, fish, and more. Add details and embellishments that will make these pieces of artwork “pop” with 3-D effect. Create treasure chests out of clay and store precious items within. Paint beach scenes with real sand and other beachy materials including seashells, sand dollars, and miniature starfish. Craft a jellyfish with fun materials including streamers and glitter! There will be an art exhibit at the end of the week to showcase each child’s work.

In this creative camp, children will learn how to develop and create unique, memorable cartoon characters themselves. They will discover how to convey emotions and personality in drawn faces and in character movement, learn shading and coloring, and how to construct funny and interesting physical features—eyes, nose, and mouth. At the end of the week, kids will see their goofy, fluffy, cute, and interesting characters brought to life by pencil, paper, paint, and… imagination!

How Sweet It Is! Summer Desserts

Ever want to learn how to create those eye-popping, candy-licious milkshakes that Burgerology is famous for? You’ve come to the right place!  Build whimsical “campfire” or “circus” shakes that delight both the eye and the taste buds! You’ll also make “Slurpees,” homemade ice cream, and an Oreo icebox cake with summer-friendly recipes that use fresh and fun ingredients including pudding, ice cream, fresh fruits, marshmallows, graham crackers, whipped cream, melted chocolate, cotton candy, and more. Learn how to make a kid-friendly tiramisu (using chocolate milk instead of expresso!). You will also decorate your own apron to wear and create a recipe book to take home. Craftfest

Get ready to go crazy for crafts! Spend this zany week using popsicle sticks, pom poms, glitter, paint, and pipe cleaners to make one-of-a-kind items. Maybe you’ll decoupage, maybe you’ll do paper mache, maybe you’ll make sand art or paint sea shells to create adorable critters. Recyclable materials such as bottle caps, paper towel rolls, and milk cartons can yield some absolutely amazing things! Enjoy stringing gems to make homemade jewelry, create ladybugs and bees out of toilet paper rolls, or use tin cans to make wind chimes! Learning how to make something beautiful out of recyclable materials is a fantastic skill and helps develop a child’s imagination beautifully.

Live from Harborfields!

For the first time…HACEF is proud to present this exceptional opportunity for our students—taking place in the brand-new, state-of-the-art TV studio and adjacent video editing computer lab at Harborfields High School! Campers will work in collaborative news teams as reporter, videographers, directors, and video editors to create “news package” videos which become part of their “Live from Harborfields” newscast. Campers will learn how to operate cameras, use microphones, operate and read from teleprompters, use greenscreens, and edit videos. At the end of the camp, each student will receive a copy of the “Live from Harborfields” newscast video that they will create during the week.

Printmaking Gone Wild!

Printmaking is a versatile medium that allows children to learn the elements and principles of transferring images through experimentation and imagination. A gorgeous variety of printmaking techniques will be explored, including monotypes, screen printing on t-shirts/canvas bags, transfer prints with Styrofoam, stamping with objects (puzzle pieces, fruit, leaves, bubble, flowers, etc.) and collagraphs. You will love the creative projects they’ll come home with each day!

Time for Slime

Kids just love that squishy, stretchy, bouncy slime…the colors, the textures, and the jiggly movement! In this camp, kids will experiment with different kinds of slime: traditional slime, tinted slime, glow-in-the-dark slime, puffy slime, “unicorn” slime, textured slime (with beads) and much more! The slimes will be taken home each day in their own individual containers. Kids will enjoy both the sensory, tactile experience of handling the slime and the cool things it can teach us about polymers and science. Campers will also make an emoji-themed craft each day as well! * Slime can be made without Borax if parents would prefer.

Sew it Yourself

Taught by Keri Puglisi of EmmaLoops Creative Studio in Huntington, this class will explore hand sewing at each child’s level, whether they are new to sewing or have been sewing for years! Maybe they love emojis, donuts, animals, sports! We can take their interests, mix in some creativity and use felt and other fabrics to complete stuffed, sewn creations of their own designs! Students can also choose to create a drawstring bag to contain their new creations! With each project, students will experiment with cutting, pinning, and hand sewing skills as well as explore different embellishments like buttons and beads and how to best add them to their work. No prior sewing experience needed. If they have taken sewing camp prior, they can make all new projects in this camp! The possibilities are endless!

Young Archaeologists

What was life like back in the 1800s, 1700s, and even thousands of years before? Long Island has a rich history… let’s discover it together! In this remarkable and enriching camp, children will use problem-solving skills, make unique crafts and play games in their quest to become amateur archaeologists and anthropologists. Come and see how Native American children lived here on Long Island hundreds of years ago! What did they eat? How did they live? Campers will make their own map of Long Island and see where the potato farms and even the local pickle growers planted their produce. How have the glaciers and erosion changed the landscape of Long Island over the years? Children will also experience a “dig” in which they search for ancient clues left behind… then make a plaster cast of an ancient fossil!

Designed to empower the mind and body as well as build self-confidence, this camp will encourage kids to discover more about themselves. Campers will learn fun ways to practice mindfulness and mediation and enjoy the calmness and relaxation of yoga…Then break a sweat with kid-centric work-outs both indoors and out! Create a personality board, make abstract paintings, keep a journal of their hopes and dreams, and learn how a healthy mind is connected to a healthy body! Kids will love experimenting with colorful bright veggies and fruits to make unique and palette-pleasing snacks. Healthy snacks will be provided each day for campers to try.

Campers will study how Pablo Picasso used these topsy turvy, transformative methods to turn the traditional art world on its head! Chopped TV Show with Mr. Mercurio

A splendiferous brand-new camp! With the chance to win a gift card each day and be featured in an upcoming “HACEF Summer Wrap-Up” newsletter, 16 lucky chefs are in for the experience of a lifetime! Each day, Mr. Merc will teach students how to make a favorite meal (pancakes, tacos, etc). Then, he will be present each team with a basket of “mystery ingredients” so they can whip up their own delicious version! A “celebrity judge” will be on hand to weigh in on the taste and presentation for each dish and make a tough decision. Winners will be given a gift card for everyone on the team! Digital Animation for YouTube!

Characters and stories to life will delight in learning traditional animation concepts—with a thoroughly modern twist! Taught by Digital Animation instructor and associate director of Arts in Education at the Cinema Arts Centre, Robby Cimino, this camp is a super-cool opportunity for students to use industry-standard computer software to create art, do editing, and add special effects to their work. Animated stories will be posted to YouTube for all to view and enjoy!
